The Tower Baroque Wax Melts
Morbid London
Every city has a dark side... and some are much darker than others. London has been described as "a spectral city, so filled with imitations of its past that it haunts its own inhabitants".
From the toturous Tower of London to the vampire-crazed digging up of Highgate Cemetery, there are endless tales of spirits and specters eminating from the Big Smoke.
Whilst re-visiting my birthplace and thinking about the new collection I'd been working on, it seemed fitting that I paid homage to my hometown and the macabre history it holds. 💀
THE TOWER
The Tower of London is a 900-year-old castle and fortress in central London that is notable for housing the crown jewels and for holding many famous and infamous prisoners.... most of whom met an untimely death.
There are so many tales of what has gone on at The Tower of London that it's hard to fit it all into one paragraph. There is of course, the tale of the two princes where two young boys were locked away and murdered at the behest of Richard III.
Anne Boleyn is argueably the most famous resident ghost to haunt the tower. She was condemned a traitor and executed (as well as 400 other people over time) and her headless body can be seen floating about on the Tower Green.
Other notably executions and subsequent hauntings come in the form of Guy Fawkes, The 'White Lady', Lady Jane Grey, Sir Walter Raleigh and probably the grisliest of all.. the botched beheading of Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury. When the Countess reached the scaffold where she was to be beheaded, she refused to kneel, saying, “So should traitors do, and I am none.” When the executioner raised his axe, she ran – and he chased her all around the scaffold, hacking at her until she died a gory death. Her ghostly screams can still be heard on the Tower Green
